Last weekend was the first big race for the year, the Beer City Half Marathon in Santa Rosa! How wonderful a race it would have been…BUT, Northern California had different plans for us. We got more snow than I’ve ever seen and ALL the highways were closed in all directions. The Humboldt crew were unable to get to the race. My sister and brother-in-law still ran, and my mom even jumped in to do the 5K. I’m proud of them! They all did a great job!
My sister, Hilary, struggled with training this year; she even broke her toe the night before the Beer City Half. But the joy of running has certainly gotten into her blood and she was able to pull off a PR!! Congratulations! Russell is always putting up impressive times, in my opinion. He finished the half in 1:52! Wooo-Hooo!
My mom trotted through the 5K. I searched for her results, but couldn’t find her information… She is gearing up to participate in the Avenue of the Giants half marathon. I hope to join her for that one.
First up for the Stuck-in-Humboldt Crew, Shannon. She routed a 10K close to home. She ran much faster than she has for several years. She didn’t send me a photo of her pre- or post-race, so please enjoy our photo from the bar where we downed our sorrows when we realized we weren’t going to make it to Santa Rosa.
Next up is the marvel that is Sei-Hee. She pretty much rolled out of bed and onto her own routed course. She completed her 13.1 miles with a smile and even stopped to enjoy some of her favorite activities along the way. I’m not sure of her time, but she run/walks. I think her overall pace was about a 12-minute-mile.
Next up, we have my wonderful and supportive boyfriend, David. He hates running! He still came with me to start me off on my 13.1 mile journey. He ran the first 1.6 miles. At least it was a gorgeous day for a run after all the storms and snow!
I was hoping to run the Beer City Half Marathon in 1:55 to make this race a personal best. That all flew out the window when we got stuck in Humboldt. I was still ridiculously proud of my pace. I ran David’s pace at the start, then I took off. I ran the rest of the course with an average mile of about 8minutes:50seconds. That is a great pace for me! I finished in 2:03. I’m so proud of myself and my team! It’s so great to be surrounded by people that are driven and motivated AND that can roll with the punches that life throws at us.
For my next challenge, I am hoping to run two half marathons in one weekend. I will do my 4th annual VAD-Ass Stroke Half Marathon on Saturday, May 6th. Then, on Sunday, May 7th I will participate in the Avenue of the Giants Half Marathon along with my mom and some friends. Stay tuned!!!
If you are interested in running along with the crew at any future race, just let me know!
